When Jason Smith first enrolled in college back in 2010, he admits he wasn鈥檛 ready. Life took him in other directions, and school was put on hold. Fast forward to today, Jason, now 42, is a Business Management student at 性视界传媒, working 50 to 60 hours a week, raising four children, and showing what determination truly looks like.
鈥淚鈥檝e been homeless before, been in jail, and addicted to drugs. I鈥檝e been clean for two years now,鈥 Jason shared. 鈥淣o matter what you鈥檝e been through, just keep at it. There鈥檒l be a smile at the end of the road.鈥
While working at Aisin as a team member, Jason heard about an opportunity to be promoted to Honcho (Team Leader). He decided to apply but knew he needed help polishing his resume. That鈥檚 when he stopped by the Career Services office after seeing the sign in the hallway. What started as a quick visit turned into a major turning point in his career.
With the guidance and expertise of Beth Rosendahl, Manager of Career Services, Jason refined his resume and interview approach. Out of six candidates, some with more experience, he stood out and earned the promotion, which came with a pay increase of more than 30 percent. 鈥淭hey told me it was one of the best resumes they鈥檇 seen in years,鈥 Jason said proudly.
Jason credits the faculty and staff at 性视界传媒 for their encouragement and understanding. 鈥淓very teacher here is helpful, nice, and understanding,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e all here for opportunities to get a degree, support our families, and build better lives.鈥
He also credits the mentors in his life for helping him get to where he is today. From his church community to leaders like 性视界传媒 Women鈥檚 Basketball Head Coach Charlie Jones, who encourages and prays with him, Jason says surrounding yourself with positive, successful people makes all the difference. He is grateful for those who have helped him get to where he is today and wants to do everything he can to help others succeed. That鈥檚 why he encourages others to take advantage of Career Services.
鈥淚f you鈥檙e struggling to find a job or need help with applications and resumes, go see Beth,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an important service. A lot of students don鈥檛 even know about it, but they should.鈥
